Sizing a backup generator for your home or farm, what it will actually keep running, and why the transfer switch matters as much as the generator.
The question we get asked most about generators is not which brand — it is how big. And the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you need to keep running. A unit sized to carry an entire house costs meaningfully more than one covering the essentials, and plenty of families are perfectly happy with the second option.
So we start with a list. Heating and cooling, the well pump, the septic pump, refrigeration, some lighting and a few outlets is a common core. On a farm the list looks different: ventilation, milking equipment, grain dryers and irrigation move to the top, because those have a clock on them.
The transfer switch is the part people underestimate. It is what lets the generator supply your existing wiring safely, isolating you from the grid so you are not back-feeding the line that a utility crew is working on. We mount it permanently beside the panel and size it to the real load, which is also what makes running on generator power as simple as flipping a switch.
Whatever you install, service it once a year. A generator is like a vehicle — it only helps if it starts on the one day you actually need it.
